Tips on building your first business web site

I get many people asking me to build a website for their business. Often the first thing they ask is how much money it will cost them. This is often followed by a second question–how long will it take?

No web designer can answer either of those questions without getting information from you first. Before you post your ad for a designer on Craigslist or start contacting designers through forums or by searching for them on Google, you need to do some thinking about the site you want. Most designers can help you through the process, but things will go a lot smoother if you can make some decisions beforehand.

What is the purpose of your site? Do you want people to buy from you online? Fill out a contact from so you can call them on the phone? Visit your store? Go to Amazon and buy your latest book? Every decision that you and your web designer will make starts from this basic point.

If you don’t know what your site is supposed to accomplish, it will probably never accomplish it.

Once you know what you want your visitors to do when they visit your site, all the other decisions will be much easier.

Everything in this post will probably be something that most of you will look at and say, “Why of course. Everyone knows your first decision is what action you want your visitors to take when they come to your site.” Sadly many new business owners do not seem to understand this. They want a site for their handyman business or pet grooming business, but they have not thought about how that site will make them money. That should be the first thing any business owner thinks about before they have a site built!
